The concept of copyright law has evolved over time. In order to protect the works you create, it is important to understand the basic guidelines for copyright law and do your best to follow them.

Copyright laws are considered to be intellectual property laws that center on qualifying creations, assigning them a duration and scope, and defining how they can be used by other parties.

The enactment of the UAE Copyright Law (Federal Law no. 12 of 2002) and its subsequent amendments has enabled the introduction to the UAE legislation a number of provisions pertaining to copyright and corresponding rights, which in turn, took effect as per June 2004. The essence of copyright in the UAE is spread between two brackets – copyright and related or neighboring rights. While the UAE law interchangeably uses “Related rights” and “Neighboring rights”, both essentially pertain to allied rights that safeguard the legal interests of particular classes of individuals, who are associated with cultural performances, such as broadcasters, performing artists, and phonogram producers. In 2016, the UAE announced that it is considering establishing a committee for the purpose of providing licenses to music performers and acquiring royalties on behalf of composers.

The UAE copyright protection law is in place to ensure that only the copyright holders have sole rights to their works. These works include writings and art forms like drawings, paintings and photographs. There are certain exceptions that come under the UAE copyright protection law. These are the legal documents such as regulations and contracts, newspapers and articles in the media as well as work that come under the domain of public property.

Copyrights are the foundation of intellectual property protection. They protect works such as books, songs, books, movies and software. These rights can be sold or transferred to third parties.
